The Health4All Legacy Project is producing a film that captures the inspiring successful fight to expand health access in California. It provides a platform for the key agents of change and the impacted parties to tell their stories so that others can learn from this journey and inspire continued efforts to provide health access for underserved communities.
Background:
California’s notable achievements in expanding healthcare access to undocumented communities are now at risk, threatened by growing anti-immigrant sentiment across the country, budget shortfalls, and inherent barriers within Medi-Cal that continue to leave thousands without access.
This issue reflects a broader nationwide challenge beyond California, as immigrant rights and human rights are being rolled back at an alarming rate, putting millions at risk of exploitation and deportation. California’s efforts to help the “Undocumented and Uninsured” is just the beginning, as over half the undocumented immigrants in the US remain uninsured.
Meanwhile, the California state government is increasingly reluctant to promote these hard-won successes, buckling under relentless pressure from right-wing media and budget shortfalls. An all too familiar narrative where immigrant communities are singled out for cuts is quietly materializing. Dehumanizing anti-immigrant rhetoric is gaining prominence in a particularly harsh election cycle, making it crucial to amplify the voices and stories of those who have been pivotal in achieving these victories. We must not sit on the sidelines as the hard-won gains of California are maliciously attacked and erased by cynicism and divisive xenophobia. It’s time to rally behind the brave advocates, policymakers and storytellers who helped make #Health4All a reality.
This Project:
The "Health4All Legacy" Documentary seeks to confront these challenges by chronicling the collaborative and inspiring efforts between healthcare reform advocates and immigration rights activists in California. This 60-minute film is designed to inspire and educate a wide audience about the state's pioneering steps toward access to health care, irrespective of documentation status and the fearless individuals whose humanity and stories changed the statewide narrative. Featuring personal stories from individuals, families, advocates and activists, the documentary aims to foster empathy and understanding while highlighting the strategies that drove these significant reforms. Additionally, the film continues the important work of humanizing our undocumented family, friends, and neighbors.
